Overview
ClearStream is a speculative design project aimed at improving coral health in Oahu through innovative water purification methods. Focusing on the Kahalu'u watershed, this project proposes a series of nature-based solutions to address water pollution from residential areas. The design integrates natural filtration techniques, adsorption processes, and nano-bubble purification, reimagining these as public amenities to benefit both the marine ecosystem and the local community.
About
We conducted extensive research into the conditions necessary for coral health, identifying water quality as a critical factor. We analyzed the Kahalu'u watershed, which carries pollutants from residential areas to the sea, including sewage from cesspools and pharmaceutical residues.
Our approach centered on developing natural, life-safe chemistry solutions to purify the water without introducing harmful chemicals. Key elements of our design include vegetation-based filtration systems, contaminant adsorption using clay, and nano-bubble purification technology. These purification methods are conceptualized as public amenities, adding value to the community while addressing environmental concerns.
This project demonstrates the potential for innovative, environmentally-friendly approaches to water purification that benefit both marine ecosystems and local communities, showcasing the intersection of ecological restoration and public space design.

Plan
ClearStream consists of several intervention along the Kahalu'u watersheds, in the form of public amenities, that have as a purpose of naturally cleaning water in it's way to the ocean.
I created an interactive digital experience that explains the entire project, as well as offer further insight into the watershed, the current state of the stream, and the water conditions.

Co-Design
It was important to recognize that these are just ideas. This plan is one way of bringing the watershed closer to its natural state. Any and all interventions at the ʻĀhuimanu residential area should be designed with the residents, not for them.
Concepts
Amenities
One amenity consists of constructing an amenity within a section of the canal, which can slow down the water, cleaning it through clay filtration and vegetation.
I constructed the final representation using a mix of CAD renderings, and various Generative AI tools, such as Vizcom, and Runway ML.
Another one consists of crafting a basin that temporarily holds water to slow down speed, and bioswales that double as parking spaces.
Lastly, we thought of crafting a floating island amenity that would simultaneusly clean water through nano-bubbles.

Interactive UX
In order to make this project public, I created an interactive summary of the research and proposal in Figma. Explore it yourself below.
